Lake District 3D Map – Bronze Terrain Relief, Blue Lakes, Cumbria Wainwright Peaks

A large, highly detailed 3D relief map of the Lake District, supplied in its own frame and ready to hang. Supplied in an aged bronze finish and hand-cast in Cumbria by Mountain Castings.

This piece is made using ultra-high-resolution terrain data accurate to one metre, allowing an incredible level of detail to be captured across the fells, valleys, passes, lakes and coastline. You can trace the ridges, identify the Wainwright peaks, follow familiar routes, and even pinpoint the area of a favourite Lake District pub, village, walk, or viewpoint.

All fifteen major Lakes and Waters, along with the Irish Sea and the southern estuaries, are filled with rich blue epoxy resin. The resin has a subtle sheen, giving the water a striking contrast against the aged bronze landscape.

The map is made using a cold-casting process and finished by hand with a dark patina to create its aged bronze appearance.

How It Is Made

This map is made using a process developed by Mountain Castings.

I create an ultra-detailed 3D printed pattern from high-resolution mapping data, then make a mould from that pattern and take solid cold-cast resin casts from it. This allows a level of terrain detail not achievable with flat prints, laser-cut wood, or vacuum-formed plastic maps.

The result is a solid, handmade 3D map with real depth, weight and presence.

Handmade Character

Each map is made to order, so slight variations from the photos are possible. The aged bronze finish is applied by hand, and the blue epoxy lakes naturally cure with unique swirls and patterns.

These small differences are part of the character of the piece and mean every map is individually finished.
